VISUAL EFFECTS

One of our visual effects shots from TITANIC, winner of the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects
|
Our VFX division worked on some of the biggest effects films out of Hollywood, ranging from TITANIC and DR. DOLITTLE
to INSPECTOR GADGET and STARSHIP TROOPERS. With a strong
background in narrative filmmaking, we were a bridge between digital
possibilities and dramatic ones.
We were a relatively small shop, but with over half a terabyte of
storage we worked in both 8-bit and 10-bit color space at 2K
or 4K resolutions. Our combination of Silicon Graphics and Macintosh
workstations enabled our digital artists to take on the challenges
of everything from complex compositing and 3D character animation
to wire removals and morphs. And we're proud to say that we were able to achieve some of our most spectacular film-resolution
shots entirely on the Macintosh, using programs like ElectricImage
and Adobe After Effects.
COMPUTER GRAPHICS / ON-SET PLAYBACK
BFTR's playback/graphics team has a long and distinguished history
of creating hero display graphics, as seen in films ranging from
AMERICAN PIE and TWISTER, to DANTE'S PEAK and STARSHIP TROOPERS.
In addition to researching, designing and animating graphics from
640x480 to 1280x1024 in size, we also specialized in on-set supervision
and 24-frame playback of our material to insure that the images
are in sync with the camera and that the colorimetry meets the
needs of the cinematographer. From actor-interactive computer
displays to looping background images, BFTR created screen
graphics to propel a story, provide exposition, and add verisimilitude.
BROADCAST AND COMMERCIALS

Our broadcast and commercial division brought the same high standard
of quality to the small screen, providing both creative ideas
and technical excellence to the world of advertising.
BFTR has created video-resolution effects for such projects as the 1998 MTV Movie Awards and the 1999 and 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, as well as for Japanese commercials for
Nissan and Mitsubishi. BFTR also provided offline editing and audio
sweetening with our Avid Media Composer/Film Composer and AudioVision
systems.
NEW TECHNOLOGIES GROUP
In concert with their effects skills, our artists have an eye
for graphic design and have contributed visually stunning work
to everything from corporate logos and print ads to CD album covers.
The New Technologies Group was also our R & D team, discovering
and developing new tools and techniques to further our digital
exploration.
LASERDISC AND DVD
 |
FIELD OF DREAMS: Signature Collection
|
BFTR's team of artists are film fans as well, several of whom
having started out at Lightstorm Entertainment creating supplements
for both "The Abyss" and "Terminator 2" Special Editions. Our
goal was the informative and entertaining presentation of material,
as evidenced by our work on the "Field of Dreams" Signature Series
laserdisc for MCA. And as proponents of home theatre, we are proud
to have been involved with Joe Kane and the Imaging Science Foundation,
contributing graphics and offline editing to Joe's "Video Essentials"
laserdisc and DVD.
